In the Val-de-Loire region a number of different efforts have been made to obtain a wine of quality. Integrated control of mildew involves the combined use of a number of different tools (modelling). The preservation of beneficial aids is taken into account in the choice of mild insecticides which preserve the native typhlodromes which prey on mites. Permanent sodding between rows, where possible, limits the yield, improves the quality of the harvest and reduces sensitivity to disease (but not to frost). It also reduces the need for herbicides and encourages the development of beneficial fauna.
Such elements of integrated protection result in a reduction of the risk of plant protection product residues in wine (which can have an adverse effect on the fermentation process, although only in very rare cases when the instructions relating to pre-harvest applications are not followed to the letter, and may also have commercial consequences), while still ensuring a healthy harvest and the production of quality wines.
