PepMV has been classified as a quarantine organism in Europe and associated measures were drawn up in the year 2000 in order to prevent its introduction and to eradicate it completely from tomato crops.
In order to understand what needs to be done for potatoes, a sensitivity study was carried out, with the aim of assessing the sensitivity levels of the strain detected on, and eradicated from, tomatoes during the year 2000.
Results of the study show that for seven varieties tested, two are sensitive, three resistant, and the two others are partially resistant (one less so than the other). For certain varieties, rapid multiplication has been observed (hence a possible transmission by contact) and/or transmission to the child tuber.
Studies of the host range (23 species) show that this strain differs from the Peruvian strain. Another study, this time of symptoms, shows similarities with strains isolated in the Netherlands and in Great Britain.
