A phytosanitary open day, organised by the main farming and para-farming groups involved in plant protection and who work together within the context of « Phyto Mieux », was held on 15 May. Based on the theme « Agriculture and Environment », 75 sites across France (62 different departments) opened their doors to over 20 000 farmers and future farmers. Practice rather than theory was the watchword of the day, with the majority of demonstrations taking place directly in the field.
The article gives an account of a visit to one of these sites, at Vaudemanges in the Marne. The usefulness of the different workshops and the quality of the stands, the educational materials available and the demonstrations are underlined.
One workshop dealt with improvements made in terms of phytosanitary products and user protection ; another dealt with the methods used in integrated protection (intervention thresholds, monitoring networks, collective operations). The workshop on the preparation of mixture for spraying and on the rinsing of containers prior to application involved the presentation of equipment and the layout of materials. A similar workshop dealt with the rinsing of sprayers after treatment.
Finally, the workshop dealing with spray treatments themselves and the associated quality factors (control of the volume of mixture used, spray settings, choice of nozzle, etc.) involved the demonstration of control techniques as well as a full-scale field demonstration of spraying in a vineyard.
