Three studies of human exposure during experimentation of plant protection products were carried out in 1993, 1994 and 1995 by the internal medical service of Rhône-Poulenc Agro France. The studies dealt respectively with ground crops, grapewines and fruit trees.
The hands are the most exposed part of the body during preparation and handling of the mixture ; the wearing of gloves is therefore always advised.
It goes without saying that wind direction must be taken into account during spraying in order to reduce exposure. However, in more general terms, the level and extent of exposure are largely influenced by crop-specific factors.
Thus, for ground crops, the lower part of the body is most exposed ; the hands and head are relatively unaffected and inhalation is negligible. Overall and boots are therefore compulsory.
As far as grapevines are concerned, the head and the entire body are subject to exposure. Overalls, masks and a helmet with visor must therefore be worn. Close proximity to the vine (0,5 m as opposed to 1 m) also increases the risk of exposure.
Exposure is generally lower for fruit tree crops. The greatest risk is to the lower part of the body, particularly where the grass is left long, but there is also some risk to the head and face.
