For the past fifty or so, phytosanitary products have proved to be the favourite tool for protecting crops against their enemies. They have played a major role in ensuring that sufficient quantities of high quality foodstuffs are produced.
Already today, and to a much greater degree, tomorrow, toxicological standards will become ever more restrictive, in an effort to preserve the environment. Alongside organic farming, which will clearly move upwards in the popularity stakes, integrated farming is making headway. Preventive maintenance is a key tool in the latter context.
Phytosanitary research has become even better organised, with improved user targeting, stricter selection criteria for testing, more nature-based product research, aimed at finding products which mirror the natural plant mechanisms, narrowing the differences between chemical and biological products, development of biopesticides and research into genetically modified plants.
The future of plant protection will undoubtedly involve a combination of methods, the use of phytosanitary products with other tools.
