From 1995 to 1997, a three-year study of beneficials and the role they play in the control of Lobesia botrana vine moth was carried out.
A bibliographical study linked with three years of faunal monitoring resulted in a much greater awareness of grapevine pests in SE France (vine moth, mites, leafhoppers and scale) and of the beneficials which can be used to control them. The extent of phytoseiid mites was highlighted.
Tests were carried out in 1997 on two separate vineyards in order to compare the effects of three different periods for anti-moth treatments. The tests showed that, in order to protect the beneficials, early treatment is to be encouraged, even with products which have a high toxical effect on the beneficials themselves. However, not even an early treatment can cope with flavescence-vector leaf-hoppers. Later treatments, which provide effective control of the pest itself, also have a highly adverse effect on phytoseiid mites, although other beneficials escape relatively unscathed, thanks to their resistance (spiders, lacewings) or their mobility (hymenoptera, parasitoids).
