In 1998 the main cause for concern for sugar beet crops was provided by the climatic conditions - Spring and Autumn rains affecting seeding and harvest, with in-between, a dry month of August.
As far as soil-borne pests are concerned, crane flies enjoyed the climatic conditions more than beetles. Wireworms in Picardy in Northern France are likely to be on the increase this year owing to the decision to stop using lindane. Nematode activity was stable.
Turning to airborne pests, Pegomyia betae confirmed its return with a more widespread activity, aphids gave cause for concern, and the Tetranychus urticae spider mite continued to pose a threat. Slugs, birds and rodents also put in an appearance at different times during the year.
Leaf diseases were few and far between, unlike brown Rhizoctone, root diseases and Rhizomania, the latter showing clear signs of spreading. For all three of these diseases, the choice of variety would seem to be an important consideration to bear in mind.
