The growing of sugar cane, introduced into Morocco in order to meet a high demand for sugar, had until recently been relatively trouble-free in plant health terms. Today however, a wide range of challenges are currently facing such crops.
The appearance of charcoal rot has effectively wiped out one productive variety and has put a halt to the multiplication of other promising varieties.
Mosaic virus has deprived the industrial sector of a variety which is resistant to frost, the main ecological danger for this crop.
The appearance of the disease known as yellow leaf syndrome has led to the non-multiplication of a variety which is immune to charcoal rot.
Furthermore there have also been reports of nematode attacks in a sandy sector which is essential for the promotion of this crop in one of the two cane perimeters of the Kingdom.
As a result of these diseases, and unless urgent measures are taken rapidly, there is a clear danger that the already modest number of varieties planted will be reduced even further to result in a mono-variety crop.
