The Sugarcane yellow leaf virus (SCYLV) can cause yield losses in some sugarcane cultivars from Reunion Island.
The infection levels of three sugarcane cultivars were relatively stable for a 30-months period and it seems that SCYLV mainly propagates by infected cuttings. The virus was detected in aphid colonies of Mela-naphis sacchari.
Twelve months after planting healthy plants of cultivar R575 in a location infested with SCYLV, 24% of the plants were infected by the pathogen.
The genetic variability of SCYLV was investigated with 48 virus isolates from Reunion Island and 24 isolates from other countries. Though the majority of isolates from Reunion Island were different from the foreign isolates, four isolates from Reunion Island were, however, very close. These results suggest that SCYLV was introduced to Reunion Island from another country and that one particular genotype evolved and spread on the island.
