As far as plant protection products for use in non-farming areas and for ornamental crops are concerned, the period April 2001-May 2002 saw very few new product launches ? just one herbicide and two insecticides using active ingredients which have been used for sometime in farming and non-farming areas.
At the same time, 27 of the active ingredient withdrawals which have been decided and which will soon be enforced, concern products used in non-farming areas and on ornamental crops. The most important decision concerns two molecules which have been subject to EU scrutiny (ethyl-parathion and zineb) and which will be forbidden for use as of 30 and 22 September 2002 respectively. The 25 other molecules will be banned from use at the end of 2003 at the latest (manufacture will be halted at the end of this year) owing to the fact that their manufacturers have withdrawn support and they are thus no longer recognised by the European authorities. The group is made up of 12 herbicides, 6 fungicides, 5 insecticides/acaricides and 2 growth regulators. Two decisions for withdrawal have also been taken concerning terbuthylazin and simazin. It has also been decided to reduce the authorised dosage levels for diuron, and even to ban the use of this active ingredient between 1st Nov. and 2 March. Maximum dosage levels for glyphosate are expected in the near future.
