Owing to the recrudescence of woolly apple aphid
in certain French apple orchards and the difficulties in controlling this pest (small number of available insecticide molecules, resistance of the aphid to vamidothion), the experimentation of a new molecule is currently ongoing.
The name of this molecule is clothianidin, a neonicotinoid produced by Takeda and developed in France by Calliope in its formulation OKW 97.
Trials carried out under laboratory conditions and subsequently in orchards (in 1999 and 2002) have shown that the molecule is fast-acting, long-lasting and extremely effective.
Furthermore, at first sight it would seem that it does not harm Aphelinus mali (a hymenopterous insect which acts as a beneficial in the control of woolly aphid) to the extent that the latter can take over from the insecticide once the effects have worn off.
