As every year, an inter-professional working group bringing together officials, technical institutes and professional bodies, is currently drawing up a national memo pertaining to the control of grapevine downy mildew.
This memo provides a status report on downy mildew resistance to Qol fungicides (of which there are three molecules, i.e. azoxystrobin, famoxadon and fenamidon, all authorized for use against grapevine downy mildew in France).
Resistance has increased considerably between 2001 and 2002. In 2002, a trial network tested 7 products representing all types of Qol-based associations, compared with non-Qol reference samples (dimetomorph and fosetyl + folpel). Only those products blending Qol ingredients with a contact fungicide (i.e. folpel) proved to be as effective as the reference samples.
The working group draws the conclusion that Qol products should be used no more than 2/3 times per year (if possible not consecutively), and other Qol possibilities (alone with cymoxanil and/or fosetyl-al without « contact ») are not recommended. Qol products authorized for use in the control of powdery mildew (i.e. azoxystrobin, methyl-kresoxim, trifloxystrobin) are still useful against this disease.
Finally, the group provides an update of its recommendations pertaining to the entire range of downy mildew fungicides on the market (height families of products, taking into account the molecules and products most recently authorized for use).
