During the last half-century, i.e. since the end of WW2, the field of plant protection has followed agricultural developments, moving ever towards increased productivity and higher product quality.
The article provides a review of the major discoveries in terms of plant protection products, dealing with both chemical products (insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and growth media) and biological control techniques (beneficials, biopesticides).
A review is also made of the uncertainty and anxiety which resulted from the use of such techniques, and also of the different problems encountered, primarily human poisoning, poisoning of non-target plants and environmental harm. Other problems dealt with include the resistance of harmful organisms, preventive regulations and technical solutions.
Finally, the article deals with the reactions of the non agricultural world and then goes on to describe the gradual development of integrated protection leading to integrated farming. The closing words are devoted to a clarification of the definition of organic farming.
