Echinothrips americanus Morgan, a North American thrips was first discovered in France in 1996. One year later it was reported in four different French regions. Extremely harmfull, its prime target is greenhouse based ornamental plants. In France, it is biologically incapable of surviving outside warm greenhouse conditions. Early indications would seem to suggest that the species causes minimal harm and that it is relatively easy to eradicate using the most commonly used thrips products. It seems likely however that the species will take up residence in France, and so information aimed at making identification easier is provided.
