Sulphur was commercialized as early as 1853 as a powder, and was the first fungicide to control powdery mildew and to save vineyards from this terrible disease. The first micronised wettable sulphur products appeared in the 1950 s and were easier to use, more efficient and more selective. The efficacy of sulphur against excoriosis caused by Phomopsis viticola was underscored during the 1980 s. Our recent work revealed a low but significant effect of wettable sulphur applied on its iron at a rate of 10 000 g/ha, to control downy mildew.
The results presented were obtained on artificially contaminated fruiting vines, and show the efficiency of mixing 10 000 g/ha wettable sulphur with an anti-downy mildew composed of 120 g/ha cymoxanil + 1 400 g/ha mancozeb, to ensure a high protection level against this disease. The study of interactions between the mixed products revealed interesting synergy phenomenons, particularly regarding contamination frequency in grape bunches.
