The control of Ambrosia artemisiifolia ragweed in sunflower crops proves to be extremely difficult owing to the botanical similarity between the weed and the crop itself, and therefore the limited number of herbicides which are effective against the former whilst protecting the latter.
The registration of a new herbicide containing flurtamone and aclonifen can be applied after sowing and prior to emergence. It provides a complement to the commonly-used pre-sowing treatments and presents a lower risk of plant poisoning than the only post-sowing herbicide currently available.
Bearing in mind the damage caused to sunflower crops by Ambrosia and also its general allergenic activity, it is a weed which must be vigorously controlled in cultivated plots. This is best done by using rotation and by taking action on crops where control can more easily be carried out and also between seasons. Open, non-cultivated crops must be monitored (field and path edges, courtyards, set-aside, etc.) which provide particularly favourable conditions for the weed. The advantage with such areas is that non-selective herbicides or mechanical means can be used.
