As far as pome fruit are concerned, the year 2002, which saw cool conditions in spring followed by
a damp summer, was mainly characterized by the
presence of apple scab. Outbreaks were extremely harsh, confirming a trend observed over the past three years. Control met with several difficulties, the causes of which are analysed in the article. Pear scab also gave a certain cause for concern, while the other diseases (powdery mildew, fire blight, Nectria galligena canker) were more discreet. Turning to storage diseases, scab reared its ugly head once more!
Moving on to pests, codling moth was better controlled than in the past, thanks to a large extent to the development of mating disruption techniques. Elsewhere, woolly apple aphid continues to cause problems in the Val-de-Loire region (where it is resistant to vamidothion) and is also enjoying a resurgence in the Midi-Pyrénées and in several orchards of some other regions. Red mites were generally well controlled, but attention must be paid to the phenomenon of resistance to ITEM-type acaricides. The usefulness of predatory mites must not be overlooked either. Attention is also drawn to reports of a number of secondary pests which should be kept under close observation (particularly in orchards in which mating disruption is practised).
