On the Ru de l'Herperie watershed in the Oise département, a water quality operation has been launched, the first stage of which, as one might reasonably expect, involved a diagnosis of water quality. It should be pointed out that farmers were heavily involved in this process between the end of 2002 and the beginning of 2003.
As a result of their involvement, the risks of point source pollution linked to the layout of farmyards and the use of spraying equipment was brought to light. Their participation also made it possible to draw up a detailed mapping programme for identifying the risks of large-scale pollution linked to upstream run-off. They highlighted the importance of weed control, borne out by the results of water analyses carried out in Picardy over the past ten years. They also assessed the impact of different farming practices on these risks, and the important role played by the type of rotations chosen.
Associated information and guidelines were drawn up at the end of 2003 (rotation, ploughing, weed control), and a weed control training programme was launched at the beginning of 2004. Furthermore, in the fight against point-source pollution, a training seminar dealing with plant protection product usage took place early in 2004, with a further seminar on spraying equipment planned for the Spring. Thus, the second stage of the operation (action plan and coaching) has well and truly begun.
