Downstream operators in agro-food channels have a common wish : establish channels guaranteed to be GM-free. A number of channels are automatically considered to be garanted such a status : organic products, fruit and vegetables from known sources, etc. A number of GM-free channels are being developed, including corn (semoulery) and soya (poultry feed).
In order that these channels provide a reliable guarantee it is essential to ensure total traceability and reliable methods of GM detection. Detection can be carried out by identifying proteins produced by the action of modified genes (using Elisa-type techniques) or nucleic acids themselves (using PCR).
Nevertheless it is essential to move towards total transparency and an international standardisation of these methods. Work is currently ongoing with this aim in mind. Furthermore, on 21 October 1999, the European Commission proposed a threshold of 1% for the accidental presence of GM organisms in raw or processed foodstuffs. Below this threshold, the product shall be considered « GM-free ». The threshold is not intended for labelling, but such action could nevertheless prove useful. This case is not closed.
