Since the early 1990's, the Netherlands has been the scene of drastic measures aimed at preserving the quality of its water, air and soil. In a country which is historically associated with intensive farming, the government, in association with the leading Dutch farmers' union, and in partnership with a number of other key bodies, has succeeded in establishing an environmental quality label and providing assistance in establishing good practices, in order to offset the effects of the withdrawal of a wide range of plant protection products. The Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality invited farming journalists on a study trip so as to present a concrete progress review of the different measures implemented. On the eve of the Netherlands taking up the Presidency of the European Union, the Minister, Dr C.P. Veerman, presented his future vision of sustainable farming, detailing the efforts required in order to face up to the difficulties involved.
