An extremely wide range of plant pathogenic soil fungi exists, whether these be direct agents or vectors. Diagnosis and correct identification is essential to ensure that the right choice of control method is made and also that regulations relating to the detection of quarantine organisms are complied with during soil, substrate and plant exchanges.
This diagnosis uses biological testing with trapping plants with specifically adapted experimentation conditions, and also microscopic observation. In certain cases ELISA tests and molecular biology (PCR) may be used.
There are however certain constraints in relation to sampling and in carrying out the diagnosis itself.
The best way ahead would seem to be the use of molecular techniques in combination with biological tests, which remain an essential element. Predictive diagnoses prior to planting, as currently used in large-scale farming (peas), is ideal for market-garden crops and horticulture, thus leading to a reduction in systematic preventive treatments. The monitoring of cryptogamic populations also has a key role to play.
