In 2004, in the face of the resistance to strobulirins of S. tritici, one of the agents of Septoria leaf spot, Syngenta Agro stepped up its monitoring processes and carried out a number of efficacy trials of different programmes.
The monitoring programme has brought to light the progression of resistance from Northern parts of the country (North-Pas-de-Calais, Picardy, Lower Normandy) where it is now almost total. Resistance is now also well-established in Champagne-Ardenne, Burgundy, Upper Normandy and in large parts of the Central region and is also present in varying levels in Brittany, the Loire region, Auvergne, Franche-Comté, Lorraine and Alsace. Syngenta has even discovered resistant strains, albeit in low levels for the moment, in the Rhone-Alps and Midi-Pyrenees regions.
The company recommends the continued use of its strobilurins azoxystrobin and picoxystrobin, (for the control of non-resistant Septoria and a wide range of other diseases and also for its physiological effects), but always in association with an effective dose of a triazol (especially cyproconazol), and at least once during the season with chlorothalonil, which produces better results when used for early treatments. Syngenta also highlights the quality of its own chlorothalonil formulation. It also markets a number of dual packs, known as «Duos», each representing a perfect marriage of two commercially available products, in order to provide «a 3-way solution» associating three molecules (strobilurin, cyproconazol and chlorothalonil).
