The Farming Provident Fund (Mutualité Sociale Agricole, or MSA) provides a report on ongoing work, work previously carried out and projects in which it has participated in the study of the relationship between the use of pesticides and farmers' health. It also provides details of available results.
As far as acute toxicity is concerned, its toxicant monitoring network, set up in 1991, and extended to cover the entire French territory since 1997, was given an injection of new dynamism at the beginning of 2004 when rebaptised Phyt'attitude. The number of declared cases has doubled. Data for the 2004-2005 season is not yet available but that of the previous years shows that T and T+ class products account for the vast majority of disorders recorded; a number of these products were withdrawn from the market at the end of 2003.
The MSA has also carried out other actions (the results of these are provided in the article): a study of exposure to sodium arsenite and another examining formulations using wettable powder (dithiocarbamate fungicides); a control case study entitled Phytoner, comparing the neurological state of vineyard workers in the Gironde region with that of a non-exposed population group; another (national) case study, entitled Terre, focusing on Parkinson's Disease. A further study centred on Parkinson's Disease is planned. Since 1995, the MSA has worked with the GRECAN in Caen in a cohort study of cancer in the Calvados region.
In 2005, the MSA launched Agrican, another cohort study of cancer, but on a much wider scale, covering 12 départéments with 600 000 questionnaires being sent out.
