A technical programme dealing with pests and beneficials was carried out between 1997 and 2001 on strawberries grown outdoors and under shelter by six producers in the Nord-Pas de Calais region of northern France.
From 1999 to 2001 inclusive, plant health monitoring of the crops was carried out (weekly observation of crops, sampling of pest and beneficial species).
The study made it possible to carry out a faunal inventory of the main pests, both primary (aphids and yellow mite Tetranychus urticae ) and secondary, beneficials and other indifferent species.
Furthermore, 31 trials of biological protection involving the release of beneficials were carried out and assessed between 1997 and 2001.
The results of the programme showed :
? limited efficacy of the release of predatory mites against T. urticae, but a good level of efficacy of ladybirds against aphids,
? the presence of a rich entomofauna, especially indigenous beneficials, both mite-eating (often effective against T. urticae) and aphid-eating (insufficient against aphids).
