Herbicides to the fore, but also other means of
protection at seed, plant and harvest level
Looking at the new corn protection tools which are currently available on the market, the most noticeable are three herbicide molecules which obtained certification in December 1997. Rhone-Poulenc's isoxaflutol, the main representative of the isoxazol family, is a pre-emergence anti-dicotyledon treatment with complementary action against certain grasses. Bayer Agro's flufenacet, the main representative of the oxycetamide family is a pre-emergence anti-grass treatment with complementary action against certain dicotyledons. The third molecule, Novartis Agro's prosulfuron is a post-emergence anti-dicotyledon treatment. Elsewhere, DowAgro-Sciences's metosulam is now available for treating corn crops (associated with flufenacet in one product and with metolachloride in another). Monsanto's acetochloride should also be available for 1999 seeding in a Sopra (containing a safener) and/or Monsanto product.
Other new developments in 1997 and 1998 include two fungicide seed treatments using Novartis Agro's fludioxonyl, a Rhone-Poulenc insecticide/nematicide soil treatment blending fipronil with aldicarb, an AgrEvo plant insecticide blending deltamethrin with pyrimicarb, an additive for insecticide and herbicide treatments and a plant fungicide containing epoxiconazol. As a final point, it must be stated that eleven insecticides containing known active ingredients have been granted authorisation for use in protecting ears after harvesting.
