Dioscorea trifida, a species of yam which is highly appreciated for its organoleptic qualities is too sensitive to viruses to be widely cultivated in the West Indies. In addition to supplying healthy vitro-plants, we also attempted to identify, from 222 hybrids of seed origin, whether any of these presented a level of resistance to viruses or at the very least led to a more tardy appearance of symptoms.
The field study, carried out in Guadeloupe, showed that no hybrids were in fact resistant but that some of them had more rustic qualities and could therefore be useful for future research.
