The use of banker-plants in the production of cucurbits is currently enjoying considerable success. It is a simple system, which consists of introducing a parasitoid to a host and to a substitute as a preventive measure, depending to a large extent on a complex, fragile balance between beneficial insects and pests.
By their very nature, banker-plants often pose a problem of reliability. In order to overcome this difficulty, the way in which banker-plants operate has been subject to study by the ""plant health and research"" unit of the Antibes branch of the National Agronomic Research Institute (INRA). This research will help to determine the possible limits of the system in order to optimise its effects for the benefit of producers.
In this article, questions relating to the biological make-up of populations are dealt with, an aspect which is closely linked to ensuring that banker-plants function correctly; the biology of banker-plants is the subject of laboratory and field trials. Two key issues are dealt with : dispersion of the parasitoids from the banker-plants towards the crop to be protected, and the effect of changing host plants for the parasitoids which have dispersed.
