The territory of New Caledonia is developing its production of food vegetables in order to satisfy the needs of the population of Grand Nouméa. The crops how-ever are affected by a certain number of pests and diseases.
The main soil-borne pests are Meloidogyne incognita worm and Aulacophora indica beetle. A type of soil bacteria, Ralstonia solanacearum, attacks potatoes and tomatoes, whilst Pythium, Phytophthora and Rhizoctonia attack intensive vegetable crops.
Diseases caused by air-borne sources are as follows : Alternaria on tomatoes, carrots, potatoes and onions ; Erisyphe on cucurbitaceous vegetables. Mycosphaerella melonis on melons, and bacteria (Xanthomonia and Erwinia) on tomatoes, peppers and carrots. The main air-borne pests are moths (Heliothis armigera , etc.), Thrips (T. palmi and T. tabaci), Aphids (Aphis gossypii), white flies ( Bemisia tabaci and Trialeurodes vaporariorum) and fruit flies of the Bractocera type.
The trend in plant protection is more and more towards integrated control. The setting-up of one or more identification laboratories and studies aimed at assessing the situation of beneficials and monitoring plant health are all necessary measures which are either ongoing or planned.
