During the Agrobiology congress at Angers in December 1996, a number of items arose relating to the protection of orchards and their fruit :
- research carried out in the Pays-de-Loire highlights the beneficial action of certain bacteria against soil fatigue
- biological control of the rosy apple aphid is proving to be problematic. Tests carried out in Brittany, Germany and the Pays-de-Loire show the worth of using resistant varieties and of winter or prefloral spraying of natural oils and insecticides which are currently on trial. The limitations of other techniques were also made clear.
- natural insecticides against plum fruit moth are currently being tested in Aquitaine.
- work is ongoing in Switzerland and Italy into ways of fighting biennial bearing without resorting to chemical clearing.
- the use of bark for covering the soil in Switzerland proved to have better results than chemical maintenance or plastic mulching
- inn France, studies are currently being carried out in order to find ways of preventing storage diseases caused by penetration through scratches and breathing pores, and also physiological diseases. Other research concerns the control of apple scab, mites and codling moth, the use of pulvétunnel (spraying tunnels) and thermal weed control.
