Faced with the resistance of Septoria tritici, one of the agents of glume blotch, to strobilurins, BASF Agro has carried out an extensive monitoring process (involving the analysis of field samples in order to assess the epidemiological situation).
The results obtained in 2003 confirm the development of resistance in the Spring of that year, especially in the N and NW areas of France. The recommendations provided by BASF, compatible with those presented in an INRA-PV-Arvalis circular already referred to in Phytoma-LdV, are to no longer apply strobilurin alone, but to use it in association with a sufficient dosage of an effective triazol (of which BASF produces two, i.e. epoxiconazol and fluquinconazol) and to respect a maximum limit of two strobilurin applications per year.
Monitoring carried out in 2004 has confirmed that resistance is indeed well established (at the beginning of Spring) and that there has been a geographic spread and an intensification of the phenomenon, albeit less rapid than in other countries (analysis of the late Spring situation after fungicide treatments). Recommendations remain unchanged for the moment.
The company believes that its own strobilurins (i.e. methyl-kresoxim and pyraclostrobin or F500) are still extremely useful, for three main reasons, one of which is subject to provisions (where resistance has not become generalised), but not the (efficacy on other diseases, impact on yields and the independent quality of actions aimed at controlling diseases and so-called « extra-fungicide effects »).
