Since it settled in La Réunion island in 2001, the peach fruit fly, Bactrocera zonata, has entered an interspecific competition with the already established Ceratitis species and tends to become the dominant species in most of the lowland areas of the island. The on-going studies in CIRAD Réunion aim at analysing the mechanisms of this competition which can be observed in larval as well as adult stages. The result of this competition is also affected by the influence of various abiotic factors (temperature, rainfall) and by the differential quality of the host-plants for the different tephritid species.
In terms of control, an on-going classical biological control programme has been set up with the objective of acclimatising an ovo-pupal fruit fly parasitoid from Hawaii, Fopius arisanus. In the meantime, research is being carried out on the specificity of this natural enemy and on the factors that play a role in host selection in this species.
The installation of the peach fruit fly in the island means that we will have to readapt the integrated control methods developed in the 90's against fruit flies damaging fruit crops.
