There are currently few available agents for use in the biological control of soil parasites. Research is however ongoing to develop a certain number of these. Such agents are selected from natural strains, either at random or for their production of anti-fungal substances. These agents act in four different ways, with sometimes a combination of more than one of these : parasitism, trophic competition, antibiosis and systemic resistance induction.
The agents are produced and formulated in such a way as to ensure that they are living and active on application. A good production/formulation method is essential to ensure maximum efficacy. The same rule applies for the choice of application method (seed coatings, preventive field application, treating of seedling plant materials).
The marketing of such agents is subject to the same regulations as all pesticides (although of natural origin, there is no guarantee of innocuity), with additional specific regulations owing to the fact that these are living organisms, thus increasing the cost of drawing up files for registration.
