Growing media play an essential part in the quality of plants. They have to provide the plant with optimal development conditions both in physical, nutritional and sanitary terms.
The products are regulated by a law (79-595 13 july 1979) on the organisation of the control of fertilizers and growing media. Following the appearance of pathological problems and the diversification of the raw materials used, the sub-committee studying toxicity decided to examine again the microbiological form used to evaluate the files. As a consequence, a « microbiological criteria » working party is aiming to define the analyses to be undertaken and to review the methods available. The national laboratory of pathogenical flora in soil in Orleans is in charge of putting forward and validating the analyses to be undertaken. The aim of the study consists of validating the inoculum density of the total flora.
All the samples, excepting sterile compost, are systematically over the threshold proposed of 105 propagules per gramme of dry substrate. Besides this phenomenon is accentuated for compost samples taken before use compared to soil and compost infected during growing. There is therefore no relation between the total number of propagules and the sanitary quality of a growing medium. Moreover pathogenic fungi, other than the Fusarium type, are not revealed by the inoculum density of the total flora. Therefore this method is not worth considering because it describes neither the quantitative nor the qualitative composition of the flora.
