During the COLUMA session devoted to Noncrop land, six presentations provided the opportunity to report on what has been done in the field.
The regional plant protection society (SRPV) and the regional crop defence federation (FREDEC) of Brittany presented two trials of alternatives to the use of herbicides. These show the usefulness of sweeping gutters and of steam weed control on waterproof areas (paving stones, tarmac-coated pavements) and, to a lesser extent, in combination with a low dosage of pre-emergence herbicide, on non-waterproof areas.
The city of Grenoble gave a presentation showing how its weed control practices and policies have developed over the last twenty years. The SRPV and the FREDEC of the Midi-Pyrenees region presented a research programme for optimising the control of crab-grass on golf courses. In the S-W of the country, an American forecasting model of the species has been validated and successful integrated weed control trials have been carried out, using this model to ascertain the best possible positioning for treatments.
A motorway management company illustrated how the weed control of its embankments has developed since the adoption of an extensive approach, following different itineraries according to the type of surface under consideration.
The French National Railways Corporation (SNCF) presented a pilot study for the weed control of railways and embankments by way of video detection of weeds. A prototype will be tested in 2002.
