? les adventices favorisées par le retrait de l'atrazine : 2003, année de transition avec la consommation de la moitié de l'année 2002, voit déjà augmenter la pression des mercuriales et renouées, notamment renouée des oiseaux ;
? les ravageurs souterrains favorisés par le retrait de divers insecticides et nématicides : taupin du maïs, scutigérelle, noctuelle terricole, nématodes ;
In 2003 the summer heat wave severely affected productivity levels for corn, with irrigation being either impossible or insufficient. Overall average yields are estimated at 73 q/ha (down from 90 q/ha in 2002). Plant health problems were of secondary importance, but there were nevertheless some difficulties in certain regions, and others which will appear at a later date.
The major pest problem was posed by airborne insects : European corn borer and Sesamia stem borer and for the first time the noctuid moth, H. armigera. There were also reports of U. maidis loose smut and blight caused by E. chrysanthemi.
Those which will cause problems in the future are as follows :
? weeds which will take advantage of the withdrawal of atrazin : 2003, a transitional year in which consumption was reduced by 50% against 2002, saw an increase in dog's mercury and knotweed, especially prostrate knotweed ;
? underground pests which will profit from the withdrawal of several insecticides and nematocides : corn wireworm, symphylan, caterpillars, nematodes ;
? D. virgifera corn beetle, identified in Alsace in 2003 after being discovered in the Greater Paris region in 2002.
