The climate of the 2001/2002 season was extremely favourable for winter and spring protein crops (pea and horse bean), with, generally speaking, fewer plant health problems than in 2000/2001.
For protein peas, leaf diseases were generally well-controlled, in spite of the pressure exerted by powdery mildew and rust in Champagne, and leaf, stem and pod rot and botrytis in the North-West. Root diseases, especially Aphanomyces euteiches, were on the whole fairly discreet. Pests caused few problems, even though the spring climate provided favourable conditions for aphids and then weevils. Weed control was carried out without any difficulties worthy of note.
Turning to horse bean crops, weed control was once again hindered by the absence of effective post-emergence anti-dicotyledon herbicides. As far as insects are concerned, as for peas, aphids and weevils were the main culprits. Finally, rust remains the main disease, even though it caused less damage than in previous seasons.
This relative calm, coupled with good harvesting conditions, ensured that good yields were reported for both pea and horse bean crops.
