The 2001/2002 rape season was an improvement on the previous one, with yields showing a sharp rise.
However, certain diseases did rear their heads, beginning with phoma in the Autumn, even in regions which are not usually affected, followed by sclerotinia in Spring, which arrived late but which was particularly strong in places. Resistance of sclerotinia to carbendazim is still being monitored and continues to spread. Powdery mildew is relatively strong.
Insects kept a low profile on the whole. The only events worthy of note were the presence of terminal bud weevil in certain regions in the Autumn and meligethes in the Spring, the resistance of which is being kept under surveillance.
Weed control met with a number of difficulties, but the cold spell at the end of 2001 did much of the work of herbicides. Trials of mixed weed control carried out in 2002 produced encouraging results and should be continued next season. Of greater concern for the upcoming season is the question or broomrape, which continues to spread.
