In order to provide advice and recommendations to orchard farmers for insecticidal control of apple codling moth, the Plant Protection Committee has produced a model for forecasting flights of the pest. This codling moth model was initialised (i.e. start of the first flight) with the aid of species caught using pheromone traps (i.e. by « sexual trapping »).
This method is however threatened by the growing use of mating disruption techniques. The Plant Protection Committee has tested an existing model known as « winter phase ». This describes the final stages of diapause and therefore makes it possible to foresee the first arrivals of the pest. A validation process of the model was carried out at the beginning of 2003, covering the years 1996 to 2003; the model was subsequently put to the test in 2003, with highly encouraging results. The model will be used again in 2004, as a complement to trapping and direct observation.
