?Context: Since its detection in France in 2006, the red palm weevil has behaved like an deadly invasive specie for the ornamental palms, especially Phoenix canariensis. The experience that we acquired on this devastating pest questions radically on several fundamental points the information spread since 2006, that was found essentially on data relative to the attack of the CRP on other palms species.
?Distinction between palms: it is essential to distinguish between the palms of less than 2-3 meters, the taller ones with offshoots or the palms wounded in the low part of the trunk with the other palms. The modes and the early symptoms of infestation as well as the preventive and curative treatments are very different between these two groups of palms. The case of tall palms without offshoot is developed in this paper.
?Early detection, control of the CRP and infested palms recue: On the tall palms without offshoot, when the infestation is not the result of an injury of the lower part of the trunk, symptoms of infestation appear inevitably and early at the foliage level. The article presents the different types of symptoms and practical indications to detect them. This early detection allows to sanitize the infested palm and so to put an end to RPW dispersal what constitutes an essential issue to succeed its control. The early detection permits also to save the infested palms by our technique of mechanical sanitation. The success of early control rests on an important and sustained effort to mobilize all the actors.
?Preventive treatments: Mass trapping with the help of olfactory traps is very efficient but it is not practiced in France. Preventive treatments currently authorized consist in showers of a chemical or biologic insecticide targeted on the basis of palms. They are efficient if they are achieved correctly and repeated every month. Considering the extension taken by the CRP before these treatments have been allowed, their frequency, their cost and their difficulty of application make their application unrealistic at a large scale. However, a technique of endotherapy permitting to protect the palms during one year has been tested with success. Its authorization would permit the adoption of a much simple and less expensive eradication strategy than the one currently proposed that is no more adapted to the considerable dimension taken by the extension of CRP since two years.
