Black-grass, a major weed pest for fields on which straw cereals are grown, is becoming more and more difficult to control owing to a shift towards farming practices which tend to encourage its development (short rotation of winter crops, reduced ploughing) and the emergence of resistance to certain herbicides used alone on a regular basis.
So, Syngenta and Du Pont have tested a tank mix of two herbicide ingredients which are active against black-grass, but with different modes of action, the former containing clodinafop-propargyl (Celio), and the second flupyrsulfuron-methyl (Lexus XPE).
This mixture can be used in a resistance prevention strategy and provides effective control of black-grass (and other weeds) together with excellent crop tolerance The application period is quite flexible (autumn and late winter) and the mixture is well-placed in terms of toxicological and environmental classification.
