The 4th CIRA (International Conference on Farming Pests) of the AFPP, held last January in Montpellier centred on the notion of integrated pest management.
The inaugural plenary session dealt directly with this subject, with speakers from the public authorities, the plant protection industry, farmers and others concerned with the processing and distribution of foodstuffs. A further plenary session dealt with resistance and studies of unintentional side-effects of products, such studies being a prerequisite in integrated pest management. The plenary session on new products dealt less with new """" conventional """" chemical molecules than with more gentle preparations or with the use of pheromones - two themes which play a key role in integrated pest management.
Integrated pest management was mentioned during a number of other specialised sessions such as : control methods; pest biology, ecology and behaviour; the effects of transgenic plants; studies of beneficial aids etc.
