The « Tropical Plant » session of the 18th Columa conference organised in December 2001 by the French Plant Protection Association (AFPP) saw the appearance of 28 papers from 10 African countries and 3 French overseas departments and territories.
Some of these communications dealt with botanical issues (description of species). Others analysed the behaviour of weeds, especially in grassland, food crops, cotton and rice?
Indirect weed control methods were also covered: alternation with food crops and sowing techniques for cotton, varietal selection of corn and sorghum, soil covering.
The issue of the use of total herbicides for preparing soil prior to sowing was raised for rice, cotton, sorghum and a range of other crops.
Manual and machine-assisted weeding were also the subject of several communications.
Finally, other issues raised included a review of the use of selective herbicides on cotton crops and a presentation of herbicide efficacy trials on cotton, rice, sugar cane, onion, corn and a range of other crops.
