In the face of the resistance to strobulirins of Septoria tritici, one agent of Septoria leaf spot, Bayer Crop Science France invited distributors and journalists to England in order to see the results of experiments carried out by its UK partners where populations of S. tritici are developing a year ahead of those in France.
Attendees were able to see the usefulness of Bayer's trifloxystrobin in association with certain triazols, most especially cyproconazol. The participants also saw that if chlorothalonil is integrated into a fungicide programme, it is highly recommended to carry out an early application, keeping triazol content at the same level.
Since this visit, monitoring carried out by Bayer has shown the rapid evolution of the situation in France. At the beginning of the 2004 season (prior to treatments), resistance was extremely strong and indeed almost total in the North-Pas-de-Calais region, well established in Picardy and Lower Normandy, and significant in Champagne-Ardenne, Central France and Upper Normandy. After treatments, resistance was almost total in all of the above-mentioned regions and significant in Brittany, Loire region, Poitou-Charentes, Auvergne, Burgundy, Franche-Comté and Lorraine.
Bayer CSF advises farmers to continue using trifloxystrobin (for the control of non-resistance Septoria and other diseases and also for its physiological effects), but always in association with an effective dose of a triazol (e.g. cyproconazol at a minimum dose of 50 g/ha). Decision-making aids such as Positif can provide assistance in drawing up a rational fungicide programme.
