Fusariosis of corn ears, caused by attacks of different species of Fusarium, particularly F. graminearum, is particularly harmful in seed production, since the quality of seeds from infected ears is severely affected.
In 1995, a survey brought to light the frequent presence of F. graminearumi, the species which is considered to cause the most widespread damage.
In 1996, experiments were carried out on two different sites (Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques) using a highly-sensitive genitor, introduced under both natural and artificial conditions.
Firstly, the effectiveness of fungicide programmes comprising between one and five spray treatments was compared between each site. For both of the triazol fungicides used, the best results were obtained from dual treatment programmes launched a few days after the appearance of the first flowers. The results of the tests also provided information on the damage caused by F. graminearum.
Secondly, the performance of different fungicides (dual treatment programmes) on the two sites was compared. Five of the six products tested proved to be highly effective; however, one year of testing does not provide sufficient comparative data. For this reason, further tests are ongoing in 1997.
