In the lead-up to the establishment of a European standard pertaining to ochratoxin A (OTA) in wine, a partnership has been established between Wine Producers of the Val d'Orbieu, Dubernet enological laboratory, LECA laboratory and Syngenta.
Aspergillus carbonarius has been identified as the fungus responsible for the production of OTA. The means of development of this fungus and the associated toxinogenesis have been established. The presence of vine moth has been shown to be a main influence on disorder. The application of insect growth regulators such as lufenuron and fenoxycarb has helped to considerably reduce the OTA content.
The effective control of ochratoxin by certain fungicides, including fluazinam, cyprodinil and fludioxonil, has been proven by in vitro and field trials.
A further study has made it possible to establish the agronomic factors which are favourable to its development. The partnership has also resulted in the publication of practical recommendations for integrated crop management in the control of OTA.
