Effective control of peach tree plum pox involves the removal of affected trees before the arrival of carrier aphids. This practice is currently triggered by observation of tree flowers during blooming ; the period of observation is however relatively short.
Following a discovery that peach tree branches show symptoms during the winter, a test was carried out in the Drôme region in 1999 in order to identify the symptoms and to compare them with identification carried out using the Elisa method and with the later blooming symptoms. The test shows that the presence of symptoms on winter branches always indicates that there is contamination (confirmed by Elisa and blooming symptoms), but also that trees which do not have winter branch symptoms, may also prove to be contaminated.
Therefore, the observation of winter branches can constitute an additional identification tool, but not an end in itself. Other tests must be carried out.
