In plant protection terms, the 2000 corn season was particularly notable for the ease in which weed control was carried out, although certain weeds did develop (summer grasses, hedgerow bindweed, Johnson grass etc., depending on the region). In plots where atrazin was not used for weed control, dog's mercury, knot grass, atriplex and groundsel were all observed.
In sectors where corn borer is bivoltine (generally speaking south of the Loire), the second generation was extremely abundant. Larva infestation was therefore at a high level ? so it should be closely monitored in 2001. The pressure exerted by maize stem borer remains constant. Reports of irregular attacks by cutworm and wire-worm should also be taken note of, especially in the Aquitaine region.
Turning to diseases, corn smut, although well-controlled in general, should still be closely monitored. Corn leaf blight was generally well-controlled in the South-West (where producers were particularly vigilant in the wake of a harsh 1999) but strong outbreaks occurred in Alsace. Finally, attention should be paid to snow mould, encouraged by late harvests caused by the climatic conditions in the autumn of 2000, in plots where the second generation of corn borer was poorly controlled, thus opening the doors to the pathogen.
