To prevent the introduction into France of new races of wood-damaging insects and thereby to protect forests and the natural environment, a trapping network has been set up. The main target insects are wood-damaging coleoptera of the Scolytidae family.
The network has been set up at all points where wood comes into the country, effectively covering the whole length of the Atlantic and Mediterranean coasts. Trapping began in April 1997 and ran through until October of the same year.
Results show a wide variety of species of Scolytidae and other coleoptera. No new pests were found, although one, Xylosandrus germanus, has only in recent years been reported in France.
