Banana trees are affected by Sigatoka, which is brought into check by mandatory control. Such control is effective, but the conditions are often difficult and meets with less and less social acceptance. Organic production can only be envisaged in the southern part of the island. A number of resistant varieties could help to solve such agronomic problems and receive greater consumer acceptance.
At the same time, the serious threat of Black Sigatoka, caused by Mycosphaerella fijiensis, has reared its ugly head. This disease, which causes even greater damage, also affects plantain bananas (bananas for cooking which are often grown privately and are therefore not treated).
Analysis brings to light a high level of risk : high introduction potential, especially by air and sea travellers, high establishment potential, serious impact potential. Such impact is of both an economic and social nature (treatment costs doubled or even tripled, disappearance of banana plantations, damage to local economy owing to effects on plantain bananas) and also environmental (three times more fungicides applied in banana plantations, treatment of plantain bananas).
The risk management measures which have already been taken must be maintained and reinforced, without forgetting research into resistant varieties and the authorisation of new fungicides.
