The early 1990s saw the development on sunflower crops of a fungus, which was previously considered as being of minor importance, belonging to the Phoma macdonaldii Boerema family. Although less harmful than Phomopsis helianthi, another sunflower stem parasite, the article states the need for control of sunflower phoma. Work has been carried out in order to increase awareness of certain steps in the epidemic process in order to optimise control of the fungus.
This study shows that under our climatic conditions, the role of conidia is limited when compared with that of ascospores in the primary infection process in the field.
